Website Tips

  • Update plenty of times. Once a week should do it, once every two weeks if you really can't update one week. Visitors will keep coming back for updates, so don't be lazy and give them what they want!
  • Your site should be fun. Sites with just game info are an automatic turnoff for me. I already get my game info from Serebii and Gamespot, so why would I need more? Most visitor will leave seeing there's nothing fun on your site.
  • Follow directions. If people tell you to give credit for using their sprites, then by all means do it! Don't steal or redistribute stuff either, it will give your site a lot of haters.
  • Pages with no content, such as games are okay, but don't heavily advertise those pages because the content isn't really yours. Only advertise them if you have some original games on there.
  • Don't use backround music on your site. It is very likely that someone will accidentally have the volume up really high, and when they go to your site, the music will blast out of the speakers and scare that person. Also if your visitor is listening to music on iTunes or something, your music will mess up the music that person is listening to.
  • Don't add pages that aren't there yet. It annoys me when I click a link and it says "not available" or "coming soon!". If you want to let your visitors know about future projects, add a "coming soon" section on your site.
  • Be nice. People will hate you and your site if you swear or spam on other sites. Also, don't put something like "sites to spam", because no matter how much you hate a site, it's not a good thing to do.
  • Use HTML. The Freewebs site builder makes sites look kind of bad, and you can do a lot more in HTML mode.

How to Think of New Content

Every webmaster/mistress always has trouble thinking of content eventually (and if you haven't yet, it WILL come). Here are some ideas to help you:
  • Look for inspiration in real life.
  • Invent your own game/puzzle or put your own spin on one you already know.
  • Start your own artwork gallery.
  • Start a comic or story series. Having the readers decide the characters' fates is a plus!
  • Random polls are always fun!
  • Start a contest of some sort.
  • Opinionated content or "rants" are interesting to read.
